When was the last time you carried out a First Aid Risk Assessment?

What is the legal requirement for first aid at work?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and people to ensure their employees receive immediate attention, if they are injured or taken ill at work.

To work out how many first aiders you need and what type of training they require you will need to carry out a first aid needs assessment.

First Aid Needs Assessments

Conducting a first aid needs assessment will identify what type of first aid training your first aiders will need, how many first aiders you need and where they should be located.

There is no requirement for the assessment of first aid needs to be formal or written down although it may be useful for employers to record the results and employers might need to justify their level of first-aid provision.

How much first-aid provision an employer has to make depends on the circumstances of each workplace.

A first aid needs assessment should consider the following:

the nature of the work and workplace hazards and risks
the size of the organisation
the nature of the workforce e.g. are there any employees with disabilities or particular health problems?
the organisation's history of accidents
the needs of travelling, remote and lone workers
work patterns
the distribution of the workforce
the remoteness of the site from emergency medical services
employees working on shared or multi-occupied sites
annual leave and other absences of first aiders and appointed person
first-aid provision for non-employees

The two levels of First Aid Training

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - 1-day course.
First Aid at Work (FAW) - 3 -day course.

You also need to keep up fresher training inline with the training providerr or awarding body recommendations.

Suggested Numbers of First Aid Personnel

The table below illustrates the suggested number of first aid personnel to be available at all times people are at work. So remember to think about shifts, illness, maternity, paternity and holiday cover.

Accidents

It is important that all accidents are recorded either in a traditional Accident book or a digital alternative. The accident may also be reportable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations. See HSE R.I.D.D.O.R guidance for further information.

You should also investigate the accident to find the root cause and put controls in place to reduce the risk of a reoccurance. This includes a review your risk assessments and communicate any changes to your employees.

Housekeeping

You should also appoint someone to check current First Aid Kits that are deployed in your business, this includes vehicles and or onsite kit bags. You are looking for:

Are the kits complete.
Are they sufficient for the risks. Do you need a burns kit, outdoor level kit, eye wash?
Are items in date? If they are out of date then they should be replaced to ensure steralisation.

Asbestos in the work place - An employer responsibility!

Understanding the risk of asbestos exposure.

HSE has launched a new campaign to highlight the risk of asbestos in buildings and raise awareness of the legal duty to manage those risks.

The duty to manage asbestos ensures workers and building users are protected from the risks of exposure to asbestos. It applies to a range of non-domestic buildings, including premises like factories, warehouses, offices and shops; and public buildings like hospitals, schools, premises used for religious worship, museums and libraries.

Whilst properties built from 2000 onward should not contain asbestos, it may be present in many kinds of older building materials.

Trades people should remain vigilant when working on domestic properties. At the end of this article are example of where asbestos maybe found in the home.

If you, the employer, identifies during a risk assessment that your employees could be exposed to asbestos through their activities then you must provide information and training. This training should be externally provided and refreshed.

Nearly two million workers in Great Britain reported suffering ill-health as a result of their work in 2022/23, with around half these cases due to stress, depression or anxiety.

In publishing its annual statistics on work-related ill health and workplace injuries, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reported that of the 1.8 million workers suffering from work-related ill health, 875,000 said they had suffered stress, depression or anxiety because of their work.

While this represents a slight fall from the previous year’s level of 914,000, the current rate is still higher than pre-pandemic levels. An estimated 35.2 million working days were lost in 2022/23 due to self-reported work-related ill health or injury.

Simon Hayhurst, Managing Director of Big Mountain Consultancy, said: “We continue to advocate a prevention-first approach, encouraging employers to prioritise a people-focused work culture that proactively adopts psychosocial risk management strategies."

“Every £1 invested by employers in mental health yields a £5 return, with increased productivity, reduced staff turnover and a prevention of absenteeism and presenteeism. Investment in occupational safety and health must therefore not be misperceived as an unnecessary cost.

“Whilst the Chancellor announced in his Autumn statement a drive to return people with long-term illnesses back to work – with more than a quarter of working-age Britons currently unemployed or economically inactive – equal support for keeping people in work remains imperative.”

Economic impact
HSE’s latest statistics also revealed the impact work-related ill health and workplace injuries are having on Britain’s economic performance.

In 2021/22, the estimated annual costs of workplace injury and new cases of work-related ill health reached £20.7 billion, representing a £1.9 billion increase compared with 2019/20.

The figures also showed that 135 workers were killed in work-related accidents in 2022/23, while 561,000 workers sustained a self-reported non-fatal injury in the workplace during the same period.

HSE chief executive Sarah Albon said: “Preventing or tackling work-related stress can provide significant benefits to employees, improving their experience of work and their overall health; and also to employers including increased productivity, decreased absenteeism and reduced staff turnover.”

According to a recent report from Deloitte, the cost of poor mental health to UK employers reached up to £45bn. This figure is made up of absence costs of around £7bn, presenteeism costs ranging from £27bn to £29bn and turnover costs of around £9bn.

The World Health Organiation estimates poor mental health costs the global economy US$1 trillion annually in lost productivity.
